Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) and San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) locked horns with each other in the eighth match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The match witnessed LAKR’s Andre Russell play a sensational 42-run inning and hit two humongous sixes out of the stadium.

Asked to field first, LAKR bowlers failed to restrict SFU batters, and the San Francisco-based side posted a daunting total of 212 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Matthew Wade top-scored for his team with a quickfire 78 runs off 41 deliveries comprising seven fours and five sixes. Corey Anderson contributed 39 runs off 20 balls to the team’s total as well. Among LAKR bowlers, Adam Zampa bagged three wickets in his quota of four overs.

In reply, Los Angeles started well, with their openers webbing a 55-run stand for the first wicket. Although Jason Roy hammered 45 runs off 21 balls, he failed to convert the start and fell victim to Haris Rauf in the fifth over. Despite wickets falling at regular intervals after Roy’s dismissal, Russell (42) kept the hopes alive for his team by adding quick runs in the end. However, the late fireworks by the all-rounder went in vain, as SFU lost the contest by 21 runs.

During his innings, Russell smashed two fours and four sixes. Two of those four maximums were sent out of the stadium by the LAKR batter. One even landed in the parking lot, leaving many in awe.

The first monstrous six by Russell came on the second ball of the 17th over off Liam Plunkett’s outside-off delivery which he smacked over the leg side in the parking lot for a maximum. Meanwhile, the second six that the 35-year-old hammered came against Rauf in the 18th over, where he recorded the tournament’s biggest maximum by making the ball travel 108 metres.
