West Indies and India are currently facing each other in the second One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados. India entered the match with a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, thanks to their impressive five-wicket victory in the opening ODI.
However, during the toss in the 2nd ODI, fans were taken aback when Hardik Pandya, the dynamic all-rounder, appeared on behalf of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. West Indies captain Shai Hope won the toss and opted to field, setting the stage for an intriguing encounter. It was later revealed that Hardik would be leading India in the absence of both Rohit and Virat Kohli.

The decision to rest Rohit and Kohli raised eyebrows among cricket enthusiasts, as these two batters are key pillars of India’s batting lineup. Hardik shed light on the team’s strategy, stating, “We were looking to bat first. We want to see how much we can score on this pitch, which is a bit up and down. Rohit and Virat have been playing constant cricket, and a few questions need to be answered for us, so they are resting in this game. They can be fresh for the third ODI.”
Given the demanding schedule of international cricket, managing player workload and ensuring their fitness and form have become crucial aspects for cricket teams worldwide. By providing Rohit and Kohli with a well-deserved rest, the Indian team management aims to keep these star players in optimal condition for future challenges.
Axar Patel and Sanju Samson step in as replacements for Rohit and Kohli
In the absence of the senior duo, India has made some changes to their playing XI. Axar Patel and Sanju Samson have been named as replacements, offering a chance for these promising players to make their mark on the international stage.
India’s previous ODI performance showcased an excellent display of bowling, as they restricted West Indies to a mere 114 runs. Hardik praised the bowlers’ efforts and the team’s impressive fielding but also emphasized the need for improvement in certain areas, particularly in batting efficiency. With a stronger batting performance, India could have secured an even more comprehensive victory.
“I think when you get someone out for 115, it’s a good effort from the bowlers. Our catching was impressive, but we can improve in certain areas. Instead of losing five wickets, we could have lost only two wickets and finished the last game. Sanju Samson and Axar Patel come in for Rohit and Virat,” added Hardik.
