The first Test match between West Indies and India got underway at Windsor Park in Dominica on Wednesday (July 12). West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat first. However, it was the visiting side that dominated the first session of the game, with their star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin causing significant damage.

The West Indies openers, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Brathwaite, struggled to score runs in the first hour of play, facing a disciplined spell from the Indian pacers, Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat. The pressure created by the pace duo allowed Ashwin to slow down his deliveries and use the drift to trouble the batters.

Ashwin eventually provided the crucial breakthrough to his team by dismissing Chanderpaul. Bowling with precision and skill, the veteran off-spinner angled the delivery into the left-handed opener. As the ball pitched, it turned sharply, deceiving the 27-year-old outside edge and crashing into the stumps.

The Guyana-born cricketer, who had opted to defend the ball by moving forward, was left astounded as he watched his stumps being disturbed. With this impressive delivery, the Chennai-born cricketer ended Chanderpaul’s stay in the middle, sending him back to the pavilion for 12 runs.

With this wicket, Ashwin also became the only Indian bowler to outfox a father-son duo, having previously dismissed Tagenarine’s father, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, during West Indies’ tour of India in 2011.

Following Tagenarine’s wicket, the Indian stalwart continued to trouble the Windies  batters, leading to a collapse in their innings. Ashwin ended up taking five wickets for 60 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja provided valuable support by claiming scalps. West Indies were eventually bowled out for a paltry total of 150.

In response, the Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal played confidently and toyed with the Caribbean bowlers. They guided the team to a score of 80/0 by the end of the day’s play, with Rohit remaining unbeaten on 30 runs and Yashasvi impressing on his debut with 40 runs.

Overall, it was a dominant performance by the Indian team on the first day of the Test match, and they will be looking to build a substantial lead in the remaining days of the game.
