The cricketing excitement in Zimbabwe reaches new heights as the inaugural edition of the Zim Afro T10 League commences today, with matches set to thrill fans from July 20 to July 29, 2023. The league will be hosted exclusively in the vibrant city of Harare.
Five teams, representing different cities, will compete in this action-packed tournament. The participating teams are Bulawayo Braves, Cape Town Samp Army, Durban Qalandars, Harare Hurricanes, and Joburg Buffaloes. A draft event held earlier this month saw Cape Town and Harare selecting 17 players each, while Durban and Bulawayo secured 15 players each, and Johannesburg signed on 16 players.
One unique aspect of the draft was that each team was required to include at least one player from the Emerging scouting programme, an initiative spearheaded by Zimbabwe Cricket to nurture young talents and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their skills on a grand stage.
Throughout the course of the Zim Afro T10 League, each team will engage in six league matches, facing all the other teams at least once. To add further excitement, two teams will compete against each other twice during the first round, taking their total matches to seven. The top four teams will then advance to the playoffs.
The first qualifier (Qualifier 1) will be contested between the top two teams in the league standings. The Eliminator match will see the third and fourth-placed teams battling it out for a spot in the next stage. The tournament follows a similar format to the highly popular Indian Premier League (IPL), with the second qualifier (Qualifier 2) deciding the last finalist for the ultimate showdown.
One of the most enticing aspects of this league is the presence of cricketers from various nations, which adds an international flavor to the competition. Notably, six Indian cricketers have joined the fray, namely Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Stuart Binny, Parthiv Patel, Robin Uthappa, and S Sreesanth. Their inclusion is expected to captivate cricket enthusiasts both in India and Zimbabwe, as they bring their vast experience and skill to the T10 format.
In an enthralling opening fixture, the Harare Hurricanes will lock horns with the Bulawayo Braves, setting the stage for what promises to be a high-octane start to the tournament.
