In a surprising turn of events, Australian spin maestro Nathan Lyon has announced the end of his illustrious decade-long career with the Sydney Sixers. The off-spinner, who has been a key figure for the Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), played 34 matches for the team during his tenure, spanning ten seasons. Lyon’s contribution was instrumental in guiding the Sixers to victory in the BBL 9 and BBL 10 editions.

However, a new chapter awaits the veteran spinner as he has officially inked a three-year deal with the Melbourne Renegades, ahead of the highly anticipated BBL 2023-24 season. The move comes as a significant development in the BBL transfer market and has already generated excitement among fans and experts alike.

Lyon excited to form partnership with Adam Zampa

Throughout his stint with the Sydney Sixers, Lyon showcased his exceptional talent and bowling prowess, amassing an impressive total of 42 wickets. This feat positions him as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the history of the franchise in the BBL.

Speaking about his decision to join the Melbourne Renegades, Lyon expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the appeal of the famous Marvel Stadium, where he enjoys bowling due to its spin-friendly nature. The prospect of forming a formidable partnership with fellow spinner Adam Zampa has also excited the 35-year-old veteran.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the Melbourne Renegades. (Marvel Stadium’s) a place where I enjoy bowling, it tends to spin a little bit. I’m looking forward to hopefully joining up with ‘Zamps’ in a really good partnership and putting on a show for the Renegades fans,” said Lyon.

Lyon further emphasized the camaraderie among players at Melbourne Renegades, citing the presence of good friends and a strong roster of senior and young players. This cohesion has undoubtedly influenced Lyon’s decision to move to the Renegades camp, where he aims to make a significant impact in the upcoming seasons.

“I’ve got some really good friends who are part of the Melbourne Renegades, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to come down. There’s a good group of senior players there who I’ve played a lot of cricket with internationally and also domestically, then you look at the younger guys throughout the roster – it’s a pretty powerful squad in my eyes,” he added.

However, Lyon’s immediate participation for the Renegades might be slightly delayed due to his ongoing calf injury. The injury was sustained during the intense five-match Ashes 2023 Test series against England. Nonetheless, the Renegades and their fans remain optimistic about Lyon’s swift recovery and eagerly await his return to the pitch in Renegades’ colors.
