England’s former skipper Eoin Morgan shared his candid views on Harry Brook‘s omission from the provisional ODI World Cup 2023 squad. The veteran English batter backed the team assembled by the England Cricket Board (ECB) and expressed understanding over the thought process of the management behind leaving out Brook.
Brook’s exclusion came as a big surprise for many as the right-handed batter has consistently impressed with his batting performances. He has amassed a staggering 1181 runs in just 12 Test matches, with 372 runs in 20 T20Is. However, it is worth mentioning that Brook didn’t get much opportunity in the ODI format and has represented England in only three 50-over games with 86 runs to his name.
Following the snub from England’s provisional World Cup squad, Brook yet again showcased his prowess by hammering a sensational century for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2023, re-igniting the debate over ECB’s decision of dropping him.
Although many aren’t satisfied with Brook’s snub, there are also some backing the ECB’s decision as they believe that Ben Stokes‘ retirement reversal left the selectors with no option but to go with the experience.

Eoin Morgan’s blunt take on Harry Brook’s snub
Among all, Morgan expressed his views on Brook’s omission as well. The former 2019 World Cup-winning captain emphasized that the team assembled by ECB is perfect. He further highlighted how the team combination will be affected if Brook is adjusted to the team.
“In really good teams that have a lot of talent, but mainly a lot of success, there are really good players that miss out. When I look at the squad that has been selected, I can’t get Harry Brook into that squad, “ said Morgan while talking to Sky Sports
“Simply because the return of Ben Stokes adds another middle-order player. Without him bowling, you do need a top-order player as a genuine replacement if somebody in the top order goes down. You need two seamers and an extra spinner which they have cover for but an extra batter in amongst that, I just can’t fit Harry Brook in, which is amazing to say,” he added.
Morgan further addressed the fan’s demands and reminded them that the ultimate goal of any team is to win the World Cup.
“A lot of fans out there will say, ‘You know what, you’ve got to get him in the team, get him in the team!’ But actually, what is the ultimate goal for the team? It is winning the World Cup,” stated Morgan.
