England’s cricketing landscape was recently rocked by the retirement announcement of the seasoned pacer, Stuart Broad. The Ashes 2023 Test series saw him bid farewell to Test cricket, marking the end of an illustrious career. Standing tall as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in Tests, Broad leaves behind a void that England must now address. Ian Bell, former cricketer and keen observer of the game, has pinpointed three potential successors who could step into Broad’s formidable shoes.

Broad, known for his fiery spells and match-turning performances, had become a linchpin of England’s bowling attack over the years. His absence will undoubtedly leave a significant gap to fill, but Bell picked three choices who could become potential successor for Broad.

Bell believes that Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Sam Cook have the potential to rise to the occasion and reinforce England’s bowling prowess. Robinson, who made an impactful start to his Test career with 76 wickets in 19 matches, experienced a dip in form during the Ashes series. However, his prior performances illustrate his ability to make vital contributions to the team. Despite his absence in the final two games of the Ashes, Robinson remains a strong contender to step back into the playing eleven and make a difference.

Similarly Tongue, a promising talent from Worcestershire, made an impressive debut during the Ashes Test at Lord’s. His five-wicket haul on his home ground demonstrated his potential to handle the pressure of international cricket. Although the latter part of the series saw England opt for experienced campaigners, Tongue’s emergence has showcased his readiness to embrace challenging situations.

Likewise Cook, representing Essex, is yet to earn his international cap, but his performances in domestic cricket have captured the attention of selectors and seasoned players like Ian Bell. Cook’s skilful ability to consistently hit the top of the off-stump and control his lengths has marked him as a bowler with the potential to shine on the international stage. Bell’s endorsement of Cook’s talent speaks volumes about the impact he could bring to the team.

“Stuart Broad’s retirement means England need to find a replacement. I think as far as replacing Broad goes, England have options and they are down the road to finding some good operators. Ollie Robinson, of course, comes back into the team,” Bell was quoted as saying to Betfair.

“Josh Tongue made his debut this summer and it looked as though he could handle the pressure of a big series. Sam Cook, from Essex, could do a job. I was with him with the Lions in Sri Lanka. He has a high skill level, hits the top of off with consistency like nobody else and his control of length is fantastic,” he added.
