As the anticipation builds for Team India‘s squad announcement for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 on Monday (August 21), cricket enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting insights into the possible provisional lineup for the ODI World Cup 2023. While the deadline for the provisional squad submission is September 5, a glimpse of the potential squad composition is expected to emerge.

One of the most pressing issues in team selection is the wicketkeeping position, where a handful of contenders are vying for the coveted slot. The primary options under scrutiny are Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul, with Sanju Samson standing as a backup. As the decision-makers convene to finalize the squad, former BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has shared his perspective on this highly debated subject.

Ganguly’s stance, unveiled ahead of the selection committee meeting, favors the dynamic Kishan as his preferred wicketkeeping option. Ganguly justified his choice by emphasizing Kishan’s explosive batting prowess and his ability to reshape the game for any team he represents. He acknowledged that while Rishabh Pant is widely considered the best wicketkeeper in the country, Kishan’s game-changing abilities make him a compelling candidate for selection.

“Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit’s and Rahul’s minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans,” said Ganguly as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Kishan vs Rahul: What the numbers say

It’s worth noting that Kishan has been a consistent presence in the ODI setup since February 2022. Across 15 matches, he has managed to amass an impressive 634 runs at an average of 48.76. His record includes a remarkable double century and five half-centuries, showcasing his ability to make substantial contributions with the bat.

Rahul, on the other hand, played as a wicketkeeper-batter in nine innings between December 2022 and March 2023. The cricketer from Karnataka demonstrated his capabilities with the bat by accumulating 321 runs at an average of 45.83, complete with three half-centuries. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL temporarily sidelined Rahul and prevented him from participating in the West Indies tour.
