With a scintillating display of power hitting in the first of the three-match T20I series against South Africa, Australia batter Tim David has propelled himself closer to securing a coveted spot in the ODI World Cup squad.

The talented cricketer showcased his prowess by smashing an electrifying 64 runs off just 28 balls during Australia’s record triumph over South Africa in the series opener at Kingsmead, Durban. David’s performance not only contributed to his team’s victory but has also earned him an extended stay in South Africa for the forthcoming five-match ODI series.

The upcoming 50-overs leg holds a significant importance for the Aussies as it could serve as a potential audition for the ODI World Cup in India, especially considering the ongoing injury concerns plaguing the 17-member squad. With key players like Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc dealing with ankle injury, wrist pain and groin soreness respectively, the selectors have turned to Tim David to bolster the squad.

Having already played 26 T20Is for Australia and being a part of last year’s World Cup squad, David brings a wealth of experience to the table. However, his international debut in the 50-over format is still pending.

Tim David will provide an extra option for us in that power role at the back end of an innings: Tony Dodemaide

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide has expressed the rationale behind David’s inclusion.

“Tim is already here for the T20 series, which offers an opportunity to see how his game can translate to the one-day format,” Dodemaide said in his official statement.

“He will provide an extra option for us in that power role at the back end of an innings,” the selector added.

The fast-paced ODI series between South Africa and Africa is slated to take place over a span of just 11 days. Notably, Marnus Labuschagne, who was dropped from Australia’s World Cup squad named last month, is also part of the contingent now, presented with an opportunity to stake his claim for a place in the final squad.

The first ODI is set to kick off in Bloemfontein on September 7 and the fifth 50-over game will take place in Johannesburg on September 17.
