Veteran Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has recently shared his thoughts and emotions regarding his exclusion from Team India’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou. The decision to omit Dhawan from the squad has raised eyebrows and led to widespread speculation about the future of his international cricket career.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a second-string squad for the Asian Games, which will not include the first-choice players due to the impending World Cup. This time around, the responsibility of leading the team has been entrusted to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Interestingly, in the past, on several occasions when key players were unavailable, Dhawan had been given the privilege of captaining the side. However, the recent omission has left him surprised and reflective.

Speaking candidly about his exclusion, Dhawan admitted to being taken aback by the decision. In an interview with PTI, he said: “When my name was not there (for the Asian Games), I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it. Happy that Rutu (Gaikwad) will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well.”
Transitioning cricket landscape: A sign of change in the Indian cricket
This exclusion of Dhawan from the Asian Games squad appears to be another indication of the changing dynamics within the Indian cricket team. With the emergence of young talents like Shubman Gill and the continued leadership of Rohit Sharma, it seems that the team is moving forward and exploring new avenues.
Dhawan, who had been a stalwart of the Indian batting lineup for years, had recently faced a setback when he was dropped from the One Day International (ODI) squad after the Bangladesh tour in December 2022. This marked a significant shift in his international cricket journey.
Despite these challenges, Dhawan remains resilient and committed to his passion for the game. He acknowledged the uncertainties that lie ahead but emphasized his readiness for any future opportunities that may come his way.
“I will be ready, of course (for the comeback). That is why I keep myself fit (so whenever I get a chance I am ready). There is always a chance whether it is one percent or 20 percent. I still enjoy training and I still enjoy the game, these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that,” Dhawan remarked, showcasing his unwavering dedication and positive outlook.
