In an electrifying encounter of The Hundred Women’s Competition 2023, Welsh Fire emerged victorious against Southern Brave by a slender margin of 4 runs. The match took place at The Rose Bowl and had the fans on the edge of their seats until the very last ball.

After winning the toss, Southern Brave elected to bowl first, putting Welsh Fire into bat. The Welsh Fire batters put on an impressive show, setting a challenging target of 165/3 in their allotted 100 balls. Hayley Matthews was the standout performer, showcasing her brilliance with the bat by scoring a scintillating 65 runs off just 38 deliveries, which included 13 fours. She was well-supported by Tammy Beaumont (26 runs) and Georgia Elwiss (28 runs), who contributed significantly to the team’s total.

Southern Brave’s bowlers tried their best to contain the opposition, but they couldn’t break through the Welsh Fire’s solid batting line-up. Chloe Tryon and Georgia Adams each managed to pick up a wicket.

Smriti Mandhana’s unbeaten knock goes in vain

In response, Southern Brave fought valiantly in their chase, led by Smriti Mandhana and Danielle Wyatt‘s explosive partnership. Both Mandhana and Wyatt showcased their class with the bat, scoring unbeaten 70 runs off 42 balls and 67 runs off 37 balls, respectively. However, despite their fight, the Southern Brave fell just short of the target, finishing their innings at 161/4 in 100 balls.

For Welsh Fire, Shabnim Ismail and Hayley bowled economically, with the latter also managing to grab a wicket. Alex Griffiths was the standout bowler for Welsh Fire, claiming two crucial scalps and helping to restrict Southern Brave’s scoring. In the end, Welsh Fire secured a thrilling victory by a narrow margin of 4 runs. Hayley was named the Player of the Match for her all-round brilliance, contributing significantly with both bat and ball.
