The third match of The Hundred Men’s Competition 2023 between London Spirits and Oval Invincibles at the Lord’s Cricket Ground witnessed a sensational fielding effort that left the cricket world awe-struck. The brilliant effort came from London Spirits’ Matthew Wade, who went the superman way to pull off a stunning six-save at the boundary rope during the second innings of the game.

Asked to bat first, London Spirit took the crease first and put up a total of 131 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Adam Rossington was the standout performer for the London-based team in their innings. He scored a brisk 39 runs off 21 balls. Wade also contributed with 37 runs off 27 deliveries. The bowlers from Oval Invincibles bowled economically and picked up wickets at crucial junctures. Nathan Sowter was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 34 runs in his four overs.

In reply, Oval Invincibles got off to a shaky start and lost three batters in quick successions with just 24 runs at the board. However, Sam Curran played a crucial knock of 34 runs off 28 balls to keep his team alive in the hunt. Sam Billings‘ fiery 25 runs off 15 balls further steadied the Invincibles’ innings. The duo’s efforts resulted in the game going down to 19 runs required off 10 balls towards the end. It was during this time that Wade showcased a sensational fielding display and saved a boundary for his team.

Mathew Wade’s superman jump save at the boundary rope:

It all happened on the 94th ball when Jordan Thompson bowled a low full toss to Gus Atkinson, and the latter flicked it in the air over deep square leg. The ball initially seemed to be going for a six until Wade timed his jump perfectly and went airborne to push the white leather back inside the boundary rope. The brilliant effort of the Spirits’ fielder was well appreciated by his teammates.

As far as the result of the match is concerned, the London Spirits bowlers tried their best to defend the total, but Oval Invincibles managed to clinch the victory. Daniel Worrall and Thompson were the standout bowlers for London Spirit, taking two wickets each.

Sunil Narine‘s exceptional all-round performance earned him the well-deserved ‘Player of the Match’ award. Narine not only showcased his bowling prowess, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in his four overs, but also provided a crucial late cameo with the bat, scoring 13 runs off 5 deliveries.
