Wellalage made his debut in List A cricket on December 14, 2019, representing the Lankan Cricket Club in the 2019–20 Invitation Limited Over Tournament. His journey reached a significant milestone in January 2022 when he was named the captain of Sri Lanka’s team for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. What’s truly remarkable is that he became the first Sri Lankan U-19 captain to score a century in the World Cup, ending the tournament as the leading wicket-taker with seventeen scalps.

Wellalage’s remarkable all-round performance caught the attention of the cricketing world, earning him a spot in the highly competitive player auction list for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL).
