The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently revealed the much-awaited Indian team’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023. The squad is a fusion of experienced players and youthful talents, generating significant buzz among cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
However, the squad announcement was not without its share of controversies and raised eyebrows. The most notable omission that has left fans and cricket experts puzzled is the absence of senior leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the lineup.
Harbhajan Singh lauds Chahal’s credentials
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, known for his prowess as a spinner, expressed his shock and disappointment at Chahal’s exclusion. Harbhajan, speaking during a discussion at Star Sports, termed Chahal a proven match-winner and emphasized that he should have been an integral part of the ODI World Cup squad.

“Yuzi Chahal is a proven match-winner. If he were playing for any other team in the world, he would have been in the first XI. He has proved himself time and time again, and it is unfortunate that he missed out from the Indian side,” remarked Harbhajan.
Harbhajan advocates inclusion of Arshdeep Singh
Harbhajan further criticized the team selection by pointing out the redundancy in picking two left-arm spinners who are unlikely to play together. He suggested that Chahal and another promising player, Arshdeep Singh, should have been included in the squad.
“We have picked up 2 left-arm spinners, who are never going to play together, and if they have a lot of left-handers in the opposition, they might not play all together. I think Chahal and Arshdeep should have been in the team,” added Bhajji.
Shoaib Akhtar joins the critique
Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar echoed Harbhajan’s sentiments and expressed his bewilderment at India’s tendency to bolster the batting order after every defeat rather than demanding accountability. He questioned the decision not to include Chahal in the squad.

“Not picking Chahal is beyond me. The odd thing for India is that when they score 220-230, they increase one batter. If the top 5 do not bat well, how will the no. 8 bat?” noted the former Pakistan pacer, highlighting the importance of a well-rounded squad.
