On Sunday, in the second ODI held in Indore, India secured a dominant victory over Australia, defeating them by 99 runs (DLS method). This win solidified India’s unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series.

India’s batting domination

Winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first. Pacer Josh Hazlewood got rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad in the fourth over, giving the guests an early advantage.

Shreyas Iyer then joined Shubman Gill and showed his form right from the beginning. The duo together forged a massive partnership of 200 runs for the second wicket. Iyer departed after scoring 105 runs from 90 balls.

Soon after, Shubman was also dismissed in the 35th over, having scored 104 runs from 97 balls.

Stand-in skipper KL Rahul took charge from there on and stabilized the hosts’ charge, contributing 52 runs off 38 balls. He was well supported by Ishan Kishan, who played a cameo of 31 runs from 18 balls. The latter part of the innings was dominated by India’s Mr. 360, Suryakumar Yadav.

The right-handed batter delivered an explosive knock, amassing 72 runs from just 37 balls, propelling India to a total of 399/5 in their allotted 50 overs. This remarkable innings set a new record for India as they achieved their highest-ever total against Australia in ODIs.

Defending a mammoth total, the Indian bowlers applied consistent pressure on the Aussies. The early dismissals of Matthew Short and Steve Smith added to Australia’s challenge in their run chase. Furthermore, a second rain delay made matters even more difficult for the visiting side, as the revised target was 317 runs in 33 overs.

With the pressure of a mounting required run rate, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took charge of India’s bowling attack and picked up three crucial wickets, significantly diminishing the guests’ chances of a successful run chase.

Shubman Gill surpasses Hashim Amla

Continuing his remarkable streak of stunning performances, Shubman’s century in the second clash against Australia has added another impressive milestone to his burgeoning career. The 24-year-old became the highest run-scorer after first 35 innings in ODI cricket, amassing a remarkable total of 1900 runs.

This achievement catapulted him past the illustrious former South African batter Hashim Amla, who held the previous record with 1844 runs.

Shubman’s remarkable knock secured victory for the Men in Blue and marked his sixth century in the ODI format, solidifying his status as one of the brightest talents in international cricket.
