Shami’s superb bowling display
Shami exhibited top-class bowling, proving to be the backbone of India’s defense. He clinched five crucial wickets for just 51 runs in his allotted 10 overs, including a maiden over, dismantling the Australian batting lineup.
Despite Shami’s onslaught, Australia managed to score 276 runs in their 50 overs. David Warner was the top-scorer with 52 off 53 balls, followed by Josh Inglis (45), Steve Smith (41), and Marnus Labuschagne (39), who contributed significantly.

Gaikwad, Shubman drive India to victory
India displayed their prowess in chasing the target, securing a victory with five wickets in hand and 8 balls to spare. Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill set the stage with a breathtaking partnership of 142 runs. Gaikwad, who is set to lead Team India in the 19th Asian Games in China, played a stellar knock, smashing 71 off 77 balls with 10 boundaries.
After Gaikwad’s dismissal, India lost three quick wickets, but Shubman continued his impressive form, contributing 74 runs from 63 deliveries, including 6 fours and 2 sixes. His performance was crucial in keeping India’s hopes alive.
Before Australia could make further inroads, stand-in captain KL Rahul (58 not out) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) took charge of the innings, steering India to victory with their respective half-centuries. With this impressive win, India catapulted past Pakistan to claim the No. 1 ranking in ODIs. Notably, this achievement now places India at the top spot in all formats, including Tests and T20Is. India joins South Africa as only the second team in men’s cricket history to attain this remarkable feat, with the Proteas achieving it in August 2012.
