As the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 approaches, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has provided his perspective on the frontrunners for the tournament, set to commence on October 5. This edition of the World Cup will showcase the talents of ten top cricketing nations, competing in a round-robin format during the league stage. The top four teams will then advance to the semi-finals.

Tournament kick-off

Pietersen’s insights: Top contenders for the ODI World Cup 2023

Pietersen who played pivotal roles for his English side in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup campaigns, has provided valuable insights into the potential frontrunners for the upcoming global showpiece event. In his analysis, the 43-year-old acknowledged South Africa‘s strong contention following their series victory over Australia. However, he emphasized that India holds the position of favourites, primarily due to the advantage of playing on their home turf.

Pietersen also highlighted Pakistan as a formidable threat in this World Cup edition. While the Pietermaritzburg-born cricketer  recognized England as strong contenders, he noted that they are slightly behind India in the favourites category.

“South Africa become contenders for the CWC after their win against Aus. Klaasen is the major asset. India favourites at home with Asia Cup win. Pakistan is always a threat. ALWAYS! England sitting just under India, in terms of favourites tag. And Australia, well they’ll be there and thereabouts…” Pietersen wrote

Team preparations and injury concerns

While India, Australia, South Africa and England have already unveiled their squads for the 2023 World Cup, Pakistan are yet to disclose theirs. An injury concern looms over the Men in Green, with Naseem Shah‘s shoulder injury potentially affecting his participation and posing a challenge to their bowling attack. The anticipation for the World Cup builds as cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the clashes among these formidable teams on the global stage.
