ODI World Cup 2023: South African skipper Temba Bavuma returns home ahead of the warm-up fixtures, here is the reason

South Africa skipper, Temba Bavuma, will miss the team’s crucial warm-up matches ahead of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan and New Zealand on September 29 and October 2, respectively.

The 28-year-old all-rounder Aiden Markram, who leads South Africa in T20I format, will take on the leadership role in Bavuma’s absence.

Bavuma is travelling back to his home nation due to family reasons that have not been revealed. Cricket South Africa made this announcement from their Twitter handle on Thursday. However, the 33-year-old is set to rejoin the squad ahead of their opening game, bolstering his side’s World Cup campaign.

South Africa to face Sri Lanka in their World Cup 2023 opener

South Africa are poised to take on Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka in their opening fixture of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on October 7.

Two of their prominent pacers, Sisanda Magala and Anrich Nortje, have been ruled out off the mega ICC event due to injuries. Nortje has a suspected back stress fracture, while Magala suffers a left knee injury.

Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams were roped in as the replacements for the injured pacers.
