In a surprising turn of events during the South Africa versus Australia 2023, 4th ODI at Centurion’s SuperSport Park, Australian spinner Adam Zampa found himself in an unfortunate position as he equaled an embarrassing record in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Zampa’s performance in the match drew attention for all the wrong reasons, as he conceded a significant number of runs, resulting in an unwanted milestone.

During the course of the 4th ODI, Zampa ended up conceding 113 runs in his quota of 10 overs, mirroring an unwanted record set by Australian pacer Mick Lewis against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2006.

Zampa’s performance with the ball was a stark contrast to what is typically expected from international bowlers, especially in ODIs.

Most runs conceded in an ODI

  • 0/113 (10 Ov) – Mick Lewis (Australia) vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2006
  • 0/113 (10 Ov) – Adam Zampa (Australia) vs South Africa, Centurion, 2023
  • 0/110 (10 Ov) – Wahab Riaz (Pakistan) vs England, Nottingham, 2016
  • 0/110 (9 Ov) – Rashid Khan (Aghanistan) vs England, Manchester, 2019

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller take Australian attack to the cleaners

In the first innings of the match, South African batter Heinrich Klaasen delivered an explosive performance that saw him rewrite several records. His exceptional innings saw him amass 174 runs from just 83 deliveries, featuring an impressive tally of 13 fours and an equal number of sixes.

Notably, Klaasen’s century in this match was the second-fastest he has achieved in his ODI career, reaching the hundred-run mark after a mere 57 balls.

Klaasen, along with David Miller, formed an unbroken partnership worth 218 runs for the fifth wicket. This partnership not only propelled South Africa but also etched their names in the record books as the second Proteas pair to achieve a double-century partnership for the fifth wicket or lower. The previous instance was in 2015 when Miller and JP Duminy amassed an impressive 256* runs for the fifth wicket against Zimbabwe in Hamilton.
