Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has voiced his concerns regarding the decision made by the Indian team management to include Suryakumar Yadav in the highly anticipated 2023 ODI World Cup squad. Moody’s critique centrrs around Yadav’s less-than-stellar ODI statistics, raising questions about the rationale behind his selection.

Suryakumar, a big talent in the Indian cricketing landscape, has garnered significant attention for his explosive performances in the shortest format of the game.

‘He is lucky to be in that squad’

Speaking about the same, Moody emphasized that the ODI format demands a different skill set and consistency that might not be reflected in Yadav’s ODI numbers.

“He is lucky to be in that squad purely because of the case that mounts against him for someone like Tilak Varma who gives you that left-hand batting specialist in the middle order who can bowl part-time spin,” Moody said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.

“It gives them flexibility around the Ishan Kishan discussion. Doesn’t mean both of them can’t play in the same side but it gives the flexibility that Rohit Sharma talked about quite regularly in the press conference,” he added.

Moody’s critique underscores the intricacies involved in squad selection for a prestigious tournament like the ODI World Cup. While Yadav’s T20 prowess is undeniable, the transition to the fifty-over format poses unique challenges. The former cricketer’s comments invite a broader discussion about the criteria used by team management to evaluate players’ readiness for a World Cup campaign, particularly when their ODI records are not impressive.

As cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the 2023 ODI World Cup, the debate surrounding Yadav’s inclusion adds an intriguing dimension to the tournament’s build-up, prompting fans and experts alike to assess the merits and risks of such selections.
