Guyana Amazon Warriors put on a dominant display to secure a convincing victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs in Qualifier 2 of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023. Dwaine Pretorius was the star performer for the Guyana-based team in their victory.

Asked to bat first, the Guyana Amazon Warriors started their innings with a strong intent to post a challenging total. Azam Khan was the star of their innings, scoring a blazing 54 runs off just 27 balls, including five fours and four sixes. Shai Hope (40) and Shimron Hetmyer (31) also made valuable contributions to help their team reach a competitive score of 182/6 in their allotted 20 overs as the Jamaica Tallawahs bowler struggled to contain the Warriors’ batters.

In reply, Tallawahs faced a steep target and found themselves in early trouble. Imad Wasim was the only batsman who put up a fight, scoring 43 runs off 33 balls. However, the Tallawahs were unable to build partnerships and ultimately crumbled under the pressure of the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ bowling attack.

The Amazon Warriors’ bowlers put up an impressive performance, with Imran Tahir leading the way with three crucial wickets, supported by Pretorius (2 wickets). Among the two wickets Pretorius picked, one came off a brilliant late-inswinging delivery to dismiss Shamarh Brooks that left everyone astonished.

It all happened on the final ball of the sixth over when Pretorius produced an inswinging delivery to Brooks, which the Tallawahs batter tried to drive but failed to get any part of the bat to it, and the ball eventually sneaked from the bat and pad gap to crash the stumps. Pretorius was pumped up after the dismissal and was seen celebrating the wicket in an animated fashion.

As far as the result of the match is concerned, the Guyana Amazon Warriors emerged victorious by a massive margin of 81 runs, earning themselves a spot in the final of the CPL 2023, where they’ll meet Trinbago Knight Riders.
