As the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023 enters its crucial phase, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has shared his predictions for the tournament’s finalists.
The 13th edition of the prestigious tournament has witnessed intense and gripping contests so far, with lower-ranked teams making significant strides by defeating higher-ranked opponents. The teams are leaving no stone unturned as they strive to gain an advantage over each other. Lyon, known for his off-spin wizardry, has now offered his perspective on who he believes will reach the final of this prestigious tournament.

Lyon said with surety that the final showdown will feature the age-old rivals, five-time champions Australia and the two-time World Cup winners and hosts, India. However, he also emphasized the extra burden of fans on Men in Blue. The final of the quadrennial event will take place on November 19 in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
“I honestly believe it will be an Australia v India final. India is the number one (favourite) for me (and) it’s been exciting to watch. India also has the pressure of the whole nation who are expecting them to win and their fans are so passionate. In finals, Australia has the runs on the board so hopefully they can go all the way,” Lyon was quoted as saying by India Today.

India and Australia’s journey so far in the CWC 2023
Speaking of the teams, India stands out as the only undefeated side in the tournament, securing six wins in as many games and comfortably perched atop the points table. On the other hand, Australia’s journey in the tournament has been a tale of redemption. After an unimpressive start with two consecutive losses, they made a remarkable comeback by winning their next four matches. In their initial match of the tournament, Australia and India locked horns in Chennai, where Australia struggled with the bat and succumbed to a six-wicket loss despite a valiant bowling effort.
The underestimated threat of South Africa
Lyon has also acknowledged the threat posed by South Africa, emphasizing that they cannot be underestimated due to their formidable and power-packed batting lineup.
“That being said, I think South Africa are still a dangerous team with a powerful batting lineup. You just have to look at their number three in Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and then David Miller,” the 35-year-old concluded.
