In the fifth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai, India showcased their dominance with a resounding six-wicket victory over Australia.
The star of the match was undoubtedly KL Rahul, whose stellar performance included a remarkable 165-run partnership with Virat Kohli, who contributed 85 runs to the team’s cause. Rahul’s remarkable knock of 97 runs nearly culminated in a well-deserved century but fell just three runs short.
Nevertheless, his outstanding batting display was pivotal in guiding the Men in Blue to a memorable win, setting the tone for their campaign in the tournament.
Rahul’s near-century and India’s victory in their World Cup 2023 opener reignited the age-old debate among cricket enthusiasts about balancing personal achievements and team success. This debate has long been a topic of discussion in the cricketing world, highlighting the delicate equilibrium between personal accomplishments and the ultimate goal of triumphing as a team.
Joining the debate, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir added his perspective on the contentious issue of personal milestones in cricket.

“What matters in the end is whether the team won or not”: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir, a pivotal part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad, has expressed a thought-provoking perspective on the debate surrounding personal milestones in cricket. He emphasized that, in cricket, the team’s victory should always take precedence over individual achievements. Gambhir expressed concerns about the obsession with personal milestones in the sport and suggested that it is the reason behind India’s ICC trophy drought.
“If you score 30, 40 or even 140, what matters in the end is whether the team won or not. I think our obsession with stats is one of the biggest reasons why we have not won a ICC tournament in so many years,” Gambhir said in an exclusive interaction with Sportskeeda.
‘Let’s get done with this obsession’
The cricketer-turned-politician further mentioned that individual achievements like scoring a century are insignificant compared to the team’s success in cricket. He stated that what truly matters is a player’s commitment to staying on the field until the end and ensuring the team secures a victory.
“For me, it really does not matter whether you score a hundred or you score whatever you end up scoring, if the team ends up winning. If you are staying until the end to take the team to victory, that is all that matters. Let’s get done with his obsession over stats. Scoring a hundred does not matter, whether you can take your team to victory or not, that matters,” the Delhi-born cricketer added.
