India’s opening batter, Shubman Gill, who missed the team’s opening World Cup 2023 match against Australia due to dengue fever, will remain unavailable for the upcoming game against Afghanistan.

Kishan’s debut duck and India’s recovery

In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan took on the role of opening the innings alongside Rohit Sharma in the game against Australia. However, Kishan had an unfortunate debut, getting out for a golden duck. Despite the early setbacks, India managed to recover and chase down the target of 200 with six wickets in hand and 52 balls to spare.

Shubman Gill to miss India’s next ICC World Cup 2023 match

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Gill’s continued absence and stated that he would not travel with the team to Delhi for the next game. Instead, he will stay back in Chennai under the supervision of the medical team.The statement on X (previously Twitter) also confirmed that Gill will miss India’s second World Cup fixture in Delhi as well.

Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” the BCCI statement read.

Gill’s exceptional form in ODIs

Gill has been in exceptional form in ODIs this year, emerging as the leading run-scorer with 1230 runs at an impressive average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. In his last four ODIs, the 23-year-old has recorded two tons and a half-century.

India’s upcoming fixtures

Following their game against Afghanistan on October 11, India will travel from Delhi to Ahmedabad for a highly anticipated fixture against Pakistan on October 14. Gill’s absence will be felt, but India will look to continue their strong performance in the tournament.
