In the world of cricket, moments of sheer brilliance and heartbreak often go hand in hand. The fourth match of ODI World Cup 2023 turned out to be one such roller coaster of emotions for cricket enthusiasts as it witnessed India’s top-order crumbling against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai after a sensational performance with the ball.

India’s brilliant bowling performance

In what was billed as a high-stakes encounter, Australia batted first and managed to score just 199 runs. The Aussie innings saw notable contributions from David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46), who played a major role in helping their team reach a respectable total.

Ravindra Jadeja impressed with the ball for India, taking three wickets and giving away just 28 runs. However, it was not India’s bowling but batting display that raised eyebrows across the cricketing world during the second innings.

India’s top-order collapse

Although the Indian top-order featuring Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were expected to lay a solid foundation for the modest chase, they faced a catastrophic collapse, all departing without scoring a single run.

It all started with the dismissal of Ishan when he got dismissed for a golden duck. Indian skipper Rohit then joined Ishan, managing only six balls before being sent back to the pavilion. Shreyas faced a similar fate, departing after just three deliveries.

The Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood show

The primary architects of India’s top-order misery were Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Starc struck early, dismissing Ishan and setting the tone for India’s struggles. Hazlewood further compounded India’s woes when he sent both Rohit and Shreyas back to the pavilion in a double-wicket maiden over. His precise line and length proved too much for the Indian batters to handle, and they had no response to his disciplined bowling.

Fan outrage and social media fury

With so many expectations from the home side, Indian fans were understandably disappointed when the Team India top order crumbled like a house of cards. Social media platforms were inundated with expressions of fury, anger, and disbelief as they vented their frustration, sharing their thoughts on this shocking collapse.
