Team India had a remarkable start to their ICC ODI World Cup 2023 campaign with a resounding victory against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Their next match is against Afghanistan on October 8. But all eyes are now turning towards the highly-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan scheduled for October 14.

Speculation surrounding Team India’s jersey

In the lead-up to the marquee India-Pakistan encounter, there has been speculation in the cricketing world about whether Team India would don an orange or saffron jersey for the match. This speculation stems from India’s decision to sport an alternate kit during the 2019 edition of the ICC World Cup in England and Wales. Additionally, in the build-up to their game against Australia in Chennai, the Men in Blue were spotted training in an orange jersey.

BCCI puts rumours to rest

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has swiftly responded to these rumours. BCCI Treasurer, Ashish Shelar, has dismissed the alleged reports and clarified that Team India will proudly don their traditional blue jersey for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

“We categorically dismiss the media reports that Team India will be donning an alternative match kit against Pakistan. These reports are absolutely baseless and a work of someone’s imagination. The Men in Blue will sport India’s traditional colors – Blue at ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” stated Ashish, as quoted by ANI.

The 2019 World Cup’s home and away jersey concept

For those unaware, the 2019 ICC World Cup introduced the concept of home and away jerseys to prevent colour clashes between teams. In cases where there was a similarity between the kit colours of two competing teams, one team would switch to an alternate colour. India famously wore a saffron-coloured kit against hosts England during that tournament to avoid the same jersey colour.
