In a stunning turn of events at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Bangladesh‘s bowlers showcased their prowess, leading to Afghanistan‘s unexpected batting collapse during the third game of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bowl first, giving Afghanistan’s top order a chance to shine. The opening pair managed to construct a solid 47-run partnership. However, the early dismissal of Ibrahim Zadran for 22 set the stage for a thrilling encounter.

The sudden collapse

Rahmanullah Gurbaz emerged as the standout performer, consistently accumulating runs. He built crucial but relatively brief partnerships of 36 and 29 runs with Rahmat Shah and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, respectively.

The tide began to turn after the dismissal of Shahidi. Gurbaz, who was anchoring the innings, was also dismissed for 47, triggering a sudden batting collapse. What was once a promising 112/2 turned into a mere 156 all-out in 37.2 overs for Afghanistan. Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz played pivotal roles, claiming three wickets each.

Despite the strong start, Afghanistan’s lower-order batters failed to make an impact, with none crossing double-digit figures except for Azmatullah Omarzai, who managed to score 22. The team’s collapse was particularly disappointing, considering that they could have aimed for a total of 230+ on a pitch that favored spinners. However, poor shot selection and a lack of resilience led to their downfall.

Shakib’s performance against Afghanistan in ODI World Cups has been consistently impressive. His figures from today’s match, 3/30, add to his stellar record:

  • 2/43 – Canberra, 2015
  • 5/29 – Southampton, 2019
  • 3/30 – Dharamsala, 2023

Mehidy, one of the chief destroyers of Afghanistan’s batting lineup, expressed his joy at the end of the innings. He said, “I am really happy, got three wickets. I was a little bit nervous in the first over, but my captain told me if you land it in the right areas, I can do well. It is a great moment for us, with the captain leading from the front.”
