Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has shared the details of his conversation with the selectors of the Australian Cricket team before being included to the 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup 2023.

The right-handed batter replaced Ashton Agar, who is omitted from the previously announced squad due to a calf injury.

Labuschagne’s recent performances in the ODI format in the recently concluded Australia tour of South Africa and the Australia tour of India have earned him a spot in the team despite his omission from the preliminary squad.

Labuschagne’s conversation with the selectors

Labuschagne recently revealed what exactly he mentioned while talking to the selectors when the initial squad was announced and he did not find a place in it.

“I couldn’t have predicted how it all unfolded and how it happened, but I was very confident. I did tell selectors when I wasn’t included: ‘I really feel like I’m the guy for you to bat at No.4. I know I’m not there, I know I haven’t performed like I wanted to but I know I’m the person for the job at that spot,” Labuschagne said on the Unplayable podcast.

The Klerksdorp-born cricketer also opened up on how he started working on his technical skills and mindset to make himself a perfect match for the ODI spot and showed complete faith in his changes.

“And then from there I worked hard at home on my one-day game on a few things I wanted to change – a few technical things and just a few mental shifts as well. I was feeling very confident. So it was just about if the opportunity was going to arise (but) I felt very confident that I would take it if it did come,” the 29-year-old added.
