Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team captain Chamari Athapaththu, who recently expressed disappointment over not being selected in various T20 leagues, including the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), has now found her place in the coveted tournament. After being overlooked in the WBBL overseas draft, Athapaththu has officially joined the Sydney Thunder as an overseas replacement player for the upcoming season.
Notably, Athapaththu previously played four seasons in the WBBL, representing the Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades. She was even a retention option for the Renegades. However, she was ultimately left out of their squad.
Sydney Thunder bolsters squad
Athapaththu will now be part of the Sydney Thunder squad, serving as cover for the three overseas players they’ve drafted: Marizanne Kapp, Heather Knight, and Lauren Bell. Heather Knight has been named the captain of the Thunder for the upcoming season, and Athapaththu and Kapp had previously played together at the Scorchers during their 2021 WBBL title-winning campaign.
Athapaththu, who has represented her national side since 2009, is well-known for her aggressive and dynamic batting style. Her inclusion not only adds depth to the Thunder’s lineup but also brings a wealth of international experience gained over her 14-year career.

Athapaththu expresses her excitement
Athapaththu expressed her excitement and enthusiasm for joining the Sydney Thunder team in the WBBL. She highlighted the significance of playing home games in Australia, where she has had noteworthy success in her international T20 career, including scoring a century at North Sydney Oval (NSO).
Athapaththu acknowledged the support she has received and looks forward to showcasing her skills in front of the fans, with a playful reference to “bringing a Thunder-storm” to the WBBL, indicating her commitment to making a powerful impact in the upcoming season.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Thunder Nation. It’s an incredible club, and the prospect of playing our home games at Cricket Central and North Sydney Oval is truly special. Australia is where I’ve scored most of my international T20 runs away from home, including a century at NSO. I appreciate all the support I’ve received so far and look forward to playing in front of the fans. I plan to bring a Thunder-storm to the WBBL this summer,” said Athapaththu in a statement provided by Sydney Thunder.
Notably, Sydney Thunder will kick off their campaign with a high-voltage local derby against the Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval on October 22.
