In the 14th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the five-time World Cup champions, Australia, are facing off against Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. The Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, currently find themselves at the bottom of the points table with zero wins in the two matches they’ve played in the tournament so far.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are also struggling as their captain, Dasun Shanaka has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury, which is a significant setback for the team. Additionally, Sri Lanka have yet to secure a victory in this ICC mega event.
Sri Lanka’s brilliant start
Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera provided a solid start for their team. Nissanka scored 61 runs from 67 balls, while Perera played a substantial innings, contributing 78 runs from 82 balls. Their partnership for the first wicket yielded an impressive 125 runs, raising hopes for Sri Lanka. However, the game took a dramatic turn when a remarkable catch by David Warner, off a delivery bowled by Aussie skipper Cummins, sent Nissanka back to pavillion and altered the course of The Islanders’ innings.

David Warner’s stunning catch
On the fourth ball of the 22nd over, Cummins bowled a short delivery with extra bounce, causing Nissanka to attempt a pull shot. The right-handed batter couldn’t rotate his wrists effectively, resulting in the ball being hit high and in front of the square on the leg side. Warner, positioned in the deep, swiftly moved to his left, slided and completed a brilliant two-handed catch to dismiss Nissanka, breaking the partnership and providing the much-needed breakthrough for his side.
