The 24th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 between Australia and the Netherlands not only showcased extraordinary cricketing prowess but also sparked a debate between two of Australia’s most dynamic players and heroes of the night, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, regarding the use of light shows at Indian stadiums.

David Warner and Glenn Maxwell’s spectacular performance

The clash between the Aussies and the Dutch was nothing short of explosive, with Warner and Maxwell taking centre stage against the Netherlands pace attack. Their brilliant centuries paved the way for Australia’s record-breaking 309-run victory. But what truly added a touch of magic to the encounter was the dazzling light show at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which intensified the already electrifying atmosphere.

The light show’s incorporation to entertain fans It is worth mentioning that most of the World Cup venues in India had incorporated light shows during breaks to entertain the fans and spectators. It was a visual spectacle that captivated the audience. However, not everyone shared the same sentiment about these light shows, particularly Maxwell, who voiced his disappointment openly after the match. The star all-rounder also cited a few reasons to justify his disapproval. Surprisingly, Maxwell’s candid take on the matter was met with opposition from his own teammate, Warner.

Australia’s resounding victory

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Australia lost a couple of early wickets, but Warner displayed remarkable composure and went on to score 104 runs off 93 deliveries, setting the stage for a grand total. Marnus Labuschagne also contributed with a splendid fifty. Still, what followed was nothing short of a whirlwind, as Maxwell hammered the fastest century in the history of the ODI World Cup, reaching three figures in just 40 balls and propelling Australia to a mammoth total of 399.

In response, the Netherlands batters capitulated to the formidable Australian bowling unit, managing a mere 90 runs in 21 overs before being bowled out. Adam Zampa shone among the bowlers, claiming four wickets for just eight runs in three overs.

Maxwell’s critique of light shows

After their record-breaking innings and Australia’s resounding victory, Maxwell didn’t just talk about his remarkable performance, but he also drew attention to how the light shows at the stadiums impact players. He argued that the bright lights cause headaches and disrupt a player’s ability to quickly adapt to the changing environment.

“I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game, I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to re-adjust and I just think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers,” said Maxwell.

“So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it’s a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players,” he added.

Warner expresses open disagreement with Maxwell

The drama didn’t end here, as Warner had a completely different perspective on the matter and took to social media to publicly disagree with his own teammate. The left-handed batter felt that everything they do, including these light shows, is primarily for the fans, and they must respect and appreciate the enthusiasm of their supporters.

“I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It’s all about the fans. Without you all, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love,” wrote Warner.
