Match 26 of the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023 between Pakistan and South Africa delivered a riveting contest, and it was punctuated by a controversial DRS (Decision Review System) incident involving the Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen.
The Rassie van der Dussen DRS drama
The critical moment unfolded during the 19th over of South Africa’s innings when Van der Dussen was deemed LBW (Leg Before Wicket) following Usama Mir‘s delivery. On-field umpire Paul Reiffel raised his finger, yet the batter opted for a review, setting off a series of dramatic events.
Initially, the ball-tracking technology displayed that the ball would have missed the leg stump. However, this tracking was promptly removed from view. Moments later, a revised tracking was presented, indicating that the ball was indeed clipping the stump. The on-field decision was eventually upheld, and Van der Dussen was obliged to depart the field.

ICC responds to the controversial dismissal
This decision provoked an uproar on social media, with fans passionately discussing the incident. In response to the situation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) acknowledged a technological glitch but asserted that the ultimate decision had been the correct one.
“In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen. The completed graphic with the right details was ultimately displayed,” an ICC spokesperson was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
South Africa’s triumph amidst controversy
Regarding the game itself, Pakistan managed to post a competitive 270 runs, with notable contributions from Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel, both achieving half-centuries. In response, South Africa successfully chased down the target in 47.2 overs with one wicket in hand and with that win they occupied the number one spot from the only undefeated side in the tournament, Team India, in the points table.
