In Match 21 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami made history as India faced New Zealand at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday. The right-arm pacer registered his third five-wicket haul in the ODIs as the Men in Blue bundled up the Blackcaps on a total of 273 in the first innings.

Daryl Mitchell powers New Zealand’s batting

Although the Kiwi openers were dismissed early, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell delivered an outstanding performance, forging a remarkable 159-run partnership for the 3rd wicket, exerting immense pressure on Team India. Rachin contributed 75 runs from 87 balls.

Mitchell scored his fifth ODI century with 130 runs off 127 balls. During the death overs, the Indian bowlers staged a remarkable comeback, taking quick wickets and limiting New Zealand to a total that could be considered below par by the end of the day.

The standout bowler of the match was none other than Shami, who, on his return to the side, secured a five-wicket haul while conceding 54 runs in his ten overs. Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were also lethal, each with figures of 10-1-45-1. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav, however, had a tough outing, conceding 73 runs in his ten overs but managed to capture a couple of wickets.
