New Zealand and Afghanistan clashed against each other in the thrilling 16th match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The encounter unfolded at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Having won the toss, the Afghans invited their opponents, the Black Caps, to bat first.

New Zealand’s commendable performance with the bat

In the first innings, Devon Conway started strongly but was given out controversially, only for the decision to be overturned after a successful review. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra formed a promising second-wicket partnership, adding 79 runs. Young scored 54 runs and capitalized on a dropped catch.

All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai had an explosive start with the ball, taking two quick wickets in his first over dismissing Ravindra and Young in the 21st over. Rashid Khan removed Daryl Mitchell in the next over, leaving New Zealand at 110/4.

The Kiwi innings were then rebuilt by Glenn Phillips (71 off 80) and skipper Tom Latham (68 off 74), who batted sensibly and crafted a valuable 144-run partnership for the fifth wicket, providing stability and a competitive total of 288/6 in 50 overs.

What followed was nothing short of spectacular as Mitchell Santner, with his incredible athleticism, plucked the ball seemingly out the air with just one hand. His stunning catch showcased his remarkable fielding skills and gave New Zealand a significant breakthrough in the game. It was a game-changing moment that left spectators in awe and further intensified the drama on the field.
