The ODI World Cup 2023 saw a great turnaround of events on Sunday (October 15) when Afghanistan handed defending champions England a surprise upset at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Afghan side’s sensational victory marked a monumental day in their cricketing history and was met with huge jubilation from fans across the world. Among those celebrating the remarkable feat of Afghanistan was the internet sensation Wazhma Ayoubi.

Wazhma is a famous internet personality who rose to prominence during the Asia Cup 2022. She is a vocal advocate of her support for Afghanistan and has also expressed her love for India and its former captain, Virat Kohli, on numerous occasions, earning her a reputation as an India-Afghanistan fan on the internet.

Wazhma Ayoubi expresses elation after Afghanistan’s win

Following Afghanistan’s triumph, Wazhma couldn’t contain her joy and took to her official social media account, X (formerly Twitter), to share her excitement and appreciation. She began by expressing her happiness over Afghanistan’s historic win and extended her heartfelt thanks to the Delhi crowd for their spirited cheers in support of Afghanistan.

“Afghanistan defeats the current world champions by 69 runs. Congratulations to all of Afghanistan. Finally, we achieve our first World Cup win after a long wait. Well done #AfghanAtalan @ACBofficials And a big thank you to all our Indian brothers and sisters cheering for Afghanistan today, Dhanyavaad,” wrote Wazhma.

Wazhma further also shared a video capturing the moment of Afghanistan’s victory and captioned it, “Yeh Delhi hai meri yaar, yahan ishq, mohabbat aur pyar! The city of @imVkohli, thank you for all the love and support #ENGvAFG.”

Her words not only expressed her joy but also highlighted the camaraderie between Indian and Afghan cricket enthusiasts.

Afghanistan batters display composure

Asked to bat first, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 284 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a pivotal role in setting the stage for the Afgan side with an explosive 80 runs off 57 deliveries. Another noteworthy contribution came from Ikram Alikhil, who added significantly with his 58 runs off 66 balls.

England surrenders to Afghan bowlers

In reply, England faced substantial challenges in building partnerships. The Afghan bowlers proved to be a great challenge for the English batters. Harry Brook emerged as the top scorer for England, contributing 66 runs off 61 balls. However, England’s innings was marked by inconsistency, and a lack of substantial partnerships hindered their progress. Mujeeb ur Rahman and Rashid Khan shined with the ball for Afghanistan, bagging three wickets each.
