In a thrilling ICC ODI World Cup 2023 clash on Sunday, pacer Mohammed Shami (5/54) and batter Virat Kohli (95) emerged as the standout performers, propelling India to a memorable four-wicket victory over New Zealand.
The victory holds a special place in India’s cricket history, as it marks the first time the Men in Blue have triumphed against the BlackCaps in an ICC event since 2003.
After the match, Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma opened up on various aspects of the game and India’s stellar performance in the memorable encounter.
Captain’s praise for Mohammed Shami
Rohit mentioned that despite his side’s remarkable start to the tournament, they still have a long way to go. The right-handed opener praised Shami, who rocked his maiden appearance in the ongoing marquee event.
“I think its a good start to the tournament. We know that the job is half done. There is a long way to go in the tournament. It’s important for us to stay balanced. Not think too far ahead of us. But enjoy the moment as well. Shami took the opportunity with both hands, the way he bowled. He has got class. The way he bowled, bowling in these conditions; he bowled really well,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rohit Sharma’s take on Indian fielding performance
Rohit appeared relatively unperturbed by India’s atypical fielding lapses, signalling a sense of composure amidst the dropped catches. He praised Ravindra Jadeja‘s world-class skills despite occasional errors, recognizing the crucial role fielding would play in the future. Additionally, the Nagpur-born cricketer expressed the team’s love for touring and playing across the country, appreciating the support from the crowd, the splendid venues, and the favourable weather conditions.
“Fielding is something we really pride ourselves on. Today wasn’t as clinical as we would have liked to. Couple of dropped catches here and there but you are talking about Jadeja who is one of the best in the world. These things happen but we want to build on that. Fielding is something that will decide a lot of things in the future. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the country. So far they have not disappointed and we also haven’t disappointed the crowd as well. Beautiful ground and weather,” the 36-year-old added.
