Leader of New Zealand‘s pace attack in the ODI World Cup 2023, Trent Boult opened up about the mega clash against India on Sunday. New Zealand’s cricket team is riding high in the ongoing World Cup, showcasing their prowess by winning all four games against England, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Their exceptional performance has catapulted them to the top of the points table, putting them in a strong position for a successful campaign.

The formidable challenge: India

However, the most significant challenge on New Zealand’s horizon is their encounter with host nation India, scheduled for Sunday, October 22, in Dharamsala. India, led by Rohit Sharma, are also in impressive form, boasting a four-match winning streak and closely trailing New Zealand in the points table. This face-off is poised to be a riveting battle between two formidable teams.

Trent Boult speaks about New Zealand’s match against India

Boult, a seasoned Kiwi pace veteran, acknowledged the formidable challenge that India poses. Interestingly, he pointed out that despite India’s familiarity with the conditions in Dharamsala, they will be under considerable pressure.

“They’re [India] a powerful team, they cover all bases. They’ve been playing some good cricket but it’s been a team that we’ve enjoyed playing. Nothing changes from our point of view really. It’s about going out there and being positive and doing the things that work well,” Boult was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“These guys are very familiar with the conditions but they feel pressure just as much as any other batsman or any other bowler,” the 34-year-old added.

The intensity of the game in Dharamsala is expected to be unique, but Boult believed Blackcaps remains committed to adhering to their well-thought-out strategies.

“India in India, it doesn’t get much bigger than that. Our games so far have been relatively quiet crowds, some people attending, but we understand the intensity’s going to go up a little bit here and there might be a firework or two. But hopefully they’re for us. (We’re) looking forward to going out there, showcasing what we can do and just picking up where we’ve left off,” the left-arm speedster concluded.

History at a glance

In previous World Cup encounters, India and New Zealand have faced each other nine times. Out of these contests, India emerged victorious in three, while New Zealand clinched the win in five, with one fixture being abandoned. The most recent memorable clash occurred during the 2019 World Cup, where India suffered a pivotal defeat against New Zealand in the semifinal, leading to their exit from the tournament.

As the stage is set for their upcoming clash, fans can anticipate an intense and closely fought battle as these two cricketing powerhouses lock horns in the CWC 2023. The match is laden with significance, and both teams will be eager to claim victory and secure their positions in the tournament’s upper echelons.
