World Cup 2023 [WATCH]: Jonny Bairstow takes a breathtaking backward-footing catch to dismiss Aiden Markram – ENG vs SA

The 20th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 between cricketing powerhouses England and South Africa had fans on the edge of their seats. The game unfolded at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium and witnessed stunning performances in all aspects of the game from both sides.

However, one moment that stood out and left everyone in awe was a breathtaking catch by English batter Jonny Bairstow to dismiss Proteas’ skipper Aiden Markram.

South Africa’s explosive start at Wankhede Stadium

The clash began with South Africa taking their turn at the crease and starting off with a bang. The dynamic duo of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen set the stage for the Proteas side with a brilliant performance, laying a strong foundation for their team. Hendricks was the star and scored a brilliant 85 runs from just 75 balls, while Van Der Dussen contributed a solid 60 runs from 61 balls. Markram also chipped in with a decent 42 runs, but his innings was cut short by a stunning catch from Bairstow.

Jonny Bairstow’s incredible catch takes centre stage

The moment of brilliance came on the final ball of the 35th over when Markram faced a delivery from Reece Topley that was full and down the leg side. He flicked the ball, but it lacked the elevation he needed and went straight towards Bairstow at deep mid-wicket, who exhibited remarkable athleticism and presence of mind.

Bairstow ran backwards, attempting to catch the ball, and although he lost his footing and fell on the ground, he managed to hang on and keep his balance to complete the catch and send Markram back to the pavilion.

South Africa continues batting onslaught

Despite the dismissal of Markram, the Proteas’ batting onslaught continued, and they posted a mammoth 399-run total against England. Thanks to Heinrich Klaasen (109 off 67) and Marco Jansen (75 not out off 42) for their explosive knocks in the later part of the South African innings.
