Zaheer, who was the joint leading wicket-taker of the 2011 World Cup, expressed his confidence in young batting sensation Shubman Gill from India as his top pick for the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Gill, known for his impeccable technique and consistency, has been making waves in international cricket with his impressive performances.
Zaheer emphasized that top-order batters often emerge as the leading run-scorers in events like the World Cup. With nine games at his disposal, Gill’s current form and his ability to anchor innings make him a strong contender for this coveted title. Zaheer further highlighted Gill’s fantastic 2023, during which he scored centuries across various formats. Despite facing challenges in the West Indies tour, Gill showcased resilience and regained his form. His consistent performances in franchise cricket further reinforce his capability to score runs consistently at the international level.
“Top order batter is likely to be the leading run-scorer that’s what generally happens. And if you are in good form and nine games is something that will help you to achieve those numbers and you will have that much time as well when u open the innings. That’s why i am saying, Shubman Gill,” Zaheer said.

For the leading wicket-taker, the 44-year-old identified two impactful bowlers, India’s Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc from Australia. Zaheer pointed out that bowlers of their caliber can make a significant impact during all phases of the game. These bowlers possess the skills, experience, and versatility to consistently trouble batters and pick up crucial wickets throughout the tournament.
“Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc will be the impactful bowlers,” the Shrirampur-born cricketer concluded.
