Australia‘s all-rounder Mitchell Marsh‘s sudden departure for home from the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 due to personal reasons has left the cricketing fans wondering about the circumstances. This announcement followed closely on the heels of Glenn Maxwell‘s injury, which was a result of a golf-related incident.

Marcus Stoinis reveals details of Mitchell Marsh’s message

In a recent interview with cricket.com.au, Marcus Stoinis shed light on the situation, explaining that Marsh had to return home due to a family issue. He emphasized that the entire Australian team stands behind Marsh and supports him during this challenging time. Stoinis revealed that Marsh sent him a heartfelt text message, expressing his determination to return and help Australia secure the World Cup trophy.

“He’s got a family issue going on and like we all know, family is very important, the most important (thing) really. He’s doing the right thing and he’s getting home and he’s seeing the people he needs to see,” Stoinis said.

“I don’t think there’s a timeline on when he’s coming back, but I’m sure he’ll do what he needs to do at home and then get back. He sent me a message last night saying, ‘I’ll be home for a little bit and then I’m coming back to win this World Cup’ so that speaks to his mindset I think,” the 34-year-old added.

Missing Marsh’s energy

Stoinis further expressed the sentiment within the squad, mentioning how much they will miss Marsh’s infectious energy on the field. Despite the absence, the team hopes to see him back in action as soon as possible. Marsh played a crucial role in the Australian batting lineup, initially taking on the opening duties alongside David Warner. Following Travis Head‘s return to the top order with a remarkable century against New Zealand, Marsh was moved to the number three position.

“You miss him off the field – in terms of his energy and his personality around the team as much as we’re going to miss him on the field – but you can pretty much see how the team’s going to line up (without him). I joked with him that he just passes the overs back to me now – and ‘thanks for that’. You know that the bases are covered, but we will miss him, and he’ll be back soon,” the Perth-born cricketer concluded.

Marsh’s contribution to Australia’s campaign

In the six matches he played, Marsh accumulated 225 runs at an impressive average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 91.46. His highest score of 121 against Babar Azam’s Pakistan in Bangalore highlighted his significant contributions to the team’s efforts in the tournament.

Australia currently stands in the third position in the World Cup 2023 points table, with eight points to their name. Their upcoming clash against arch-rivals England on Saturday, November 4 promises to be a thrilling encounter.
