After India’s heart-wrenching defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 final against Australia, the spotlight has shifted to the future of the top two run-scorers of the tournament, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. As discussions about the T20 World Cup 2024 intensify, questions surrounding the inclusion of these cricketing stalwarts have emerged within the fraternity.
Since India’s exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England, neither Kohli nor Rohit has participated in any shorter-format games. In Rohit’s absence, all-rounder Hardik Pandya assumed leadership, steering the team with competence. Currently, Team India are taking on Australia in the T20I leg where Suryakumar Yadav is leading the side with Hardik being injured and other senior stars have been rested.
Chris Gayle’s take on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future
Former West Indies batter Chris Gayle has shared his perspective on the future of Kohli and Rohit. The ‘Universe Boss’ emphasized that both players have contributed immensely to their country and should be entrusted with the decision-making process regarding their future in international cricket.
“Those guys (Rohit and Virat) should make the call. They should give the opportunity to those guys to make the call, and if those guys want to do it, I am sure they will,” stated Gayle, as quoted by GeoSuper.

Respecting their contributions
Gayle further highlighted the incredible service that Kohli and Rohit have provided to Indian cricket, suggesting that the duo deserves the autonomy to decide their future paths. Expressing admiration for their contributions, the Windies giant urged the cricketing community to afford Kohli and Rohit the respect they have earned.
“Why not? They have done incredible service, and they deserve to make a call of their own, and I am sure they will be given that respect for what they have done for the country. It’s phenomenal and fantastic. So, Virat and Rohit should have the say, I wanna do it or I don’t wanna do it. Give them the ownership,” added Gayle.
