Nine years ago, on this day (27 November) in 2014, the cricketing world was plunged into sorrow as the promising Australian cricketer, Phillip Hughes, bid an untimely farewell to the world after facing a life-taking injury during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The unfortunate incident occurred when Hughes was batting at 63 not out, and a deadly bouncer struck him below his ear, ultimately claiming his life. Today, on the ninth anniversary of that tragic day, Australian cricketers took to social media to pay heartfelt tributes to their fallen mate, remembering the young talent whose impact extended far beyond the cricket field.

Remembering Phillip Hughes

Hughes, who played 26 Tests, 25 ODIs, and a T20I for Australia, left an indelible mark on the sport. His untimely demise at just 25 years old sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, and his funeral saw many Australian cricketers in attendance, visibly moved and grief-stricken.

In a touching gesture after his demise, Hughes was named “the 13th man” for the Australian during the first Test against India in December, with his test cap number “408” sewn under the badge of all Australian players and painted on the field. The match began with 63 seconds of applause, honouring the innings Hughes couldn’t complete.
