Following the trade of West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to Mumbai Indians (MI), the attention now turns to the crucial details surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Hours after MI confirmed the trade, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially unveiled the date and venue for the IPL 2024 players’ auction, along with an extended deadline for teams to submit their list of retained players as reported by Cricbuzz.
IPL auction venue and date
The BCCI has chosen Dubai as the host city for the IPL 2024 players’ auction. The highly anticipated auction event will unfold at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19, 2023, marking an exciting phase in the build-up to the next edition of the IPL.
Deadline for retention list
In a significant development, the BCCI has extended the deadline for franchises to release their list of retained players. The initial deadline of November 15 has been pushed back, allowing teams more time to make crucial decisions regarding player retention. The revised deadline for submission of the retention list is now set for November 26, 2023. This extension provides franchises with additional time to assess and finalize their retained player choices.

Salary cap and mega auction on the horizon
Notably, the 10 IPL teams will operate under a salary cap of INR 100 crore for the IPL 2024 season. This cap continues to shape the financial dynamics of team-building and player acquisitions in the league.
The upcoming IPL season will be the third and final year of the three-year player contracts. It is important to highlight that the 2024 season sets the stage for a mega auction in the following year. A mega auction offers an opportunity for teams to undergo significant squad transformations and introduce new talent to their lineups.
