In the latest buzz surrounding the IPL 2024 auctions, several media outlets have reported that Mumbai Indians (MI) might consider releasing their long-standing captain, Rohit Sharma, to facilitate the return of the dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya. While the rumour mill has been abuzz with discussions and fan theories, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction.
Is Mumbai Indians really parting ways with Rohit Sharma?
Sources close to the MI management have confirmed that the franchise is indeed contemplating strategic changes ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. And it is due to this reason that the reports of MI releasing Rohit, who has been at the helm of the team for several successful seasons, has sparked intrigue among cricket enthusiasts. However, there is no truth behind MI trading Rohit with Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain Hardik for IPL 2024. In fact, Rohit is not going anywhere and will continue to lead the Mumbai-based franchise in the forthcoming season.
Hardik Pandya may rejoin MI
Also, the possibility of bringing back Hardik, who had been a vital asset to MI in the past, is a consideration for bolstering the team’s balance. Hardik, known for his explosive batting and effective bowling, could add a dynamic edge to MI’s lineup if the Ahmedabad-based Gujarat team is ready to leave their skipper.

MI are ready to pay INR 15 crore to GT for Hardik and complete the biggest trade in the history of IPL. But to generate extra funds of INR 5 crore, the five-time champions have to release some of their big buys, namely Cameron Green (INR 17.5 crore) and Jofra Archer (INR 8 crore).
MI, a franchise known for its well-thought-out strategies and consistency in team management, is expected to make decisions based on the best interests of the team’s performance in the upcoming season. The IPL 2024 auction, scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, will shed more light on the team’s final composition.
