Glenn Maxwell’s magic steers Australia to the semi-final

Notably, in the chase of 292, Australia were in deep trouble after losing their seven wickets for just 91 and it looked like the Afghans would go on to register an emphatic victory. However, Maxwell’s heroics turned the tide as he played an unbeaten knock of 201, guiding Australia to a stunning comeback win. This victory solidified Australia’s place in the semi-finals and etched Maxwell’s name in cricket history.

The Afghan cricket team, after their loss to Australia, now find themselves in a precarious position in the ODI World Cup. With eight points, they currently occupy the sixth position in the points table. Their next match is against South Africa and their qualification hinges on the outcomes of other games.

Afghanistan’s qualification scenario for semi-final spot

A 3-way tiebreaker: If Afghanistan win against the Proteas, and New Zealand &; Pakistan both win their last matches, they will each accumulate 10 points, setting the stage for a three-way tiebreaker. In this scenario, Net Run Rate (NRR) becomes the deciding factor to determine which team advances to the semi-finals.

Afghanistan’s loss: If Afghanistan lose their game against South Africa, and either New Zealand or Pakistan win, Afghanistan’s semi-final hopes are dashed.

Defeat of all three teams: If all three teams lose, Afghanistan’s chances still depend on NRR. Currently, Afghanistan’s NRR is worse than both Pakistan’s and New Zealand’s, making it a challenging path to the semi-finals.
