In a thrilling encounter at the Eden Gardens on Thursday, Australia emerged victorious over South Africa by three wickets in the second semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023.

The intense clash witnessed the Aussies sealing their place in the final while the Proteas faced a disheartening conclusion to their campaign in this prestigious tournament.

The defeat marked the Temba Bavuma-led side’s fourth semi-final loss in the history of the ODI World Cups, adding a tinge of disappointment to an otherwise commendable journey.

Temba Bavuma’s comments

Bavuma praised his team’s character, highlighting their resilience during the game and acknowledging that their performance with both bat and ball, especially the challenging start, was a key factor in the match outcome. The right-handed batter credited the opposition (Australia)’s quality pace attack and the impact of the playing conditions, acknowledging the pressure they faced.

“We displayed a brilliant character today, it came out throughout the game. We showed a lot of resilience. The way we started with the bat and the ball was the telling point, that’s where we lost the game. The conditions dictated terms, and it combined well with their pace attack, which is, without a doubt, a quality one. They put us under a lot of pressure.” Bavuma said in the post-match ceremony.
