England took on Netherlands in the 40th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the picturesque Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Wednesday (November 8). The English team emerged victorious in the contest by 160 runs to keep their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 qualification hopes alive. Ben Stokes was the hero of the match as he hammered a brilliant ton against the Dutch side.

England’s impressive batting performance

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, England got off to a steady start with the top-order batters putting up a decent show. However, it was the brilliant Dawid Malan who stole the show with a sublime 87 runs off 74 balls. His partnership with Stokes, who played a breathtaking innings of 108 runs off 84 balls, was the cornerstone of England’s innings.

Stokes showcased his ability to hit the ball to all parts of the ground and was unstoppable throughout his innings. The England all-rounder smashed six fours and as many sixes during his fiery knock.

Chris Woakes brilliant cameo

Chris Woakes, coming in lower down the order, played a crucial cameo, scoring 51 runs off 45 balls. His valuable contribution towards the end of the innings helped England post a formidable total of 339/9. Bas de Leede was the pick of the Netherlands bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/74.

Netherlands struggle against England’s clinical bowling

In reply, the Netherlands faced a steep target of 340 runs. The English bowlers were relentless and kept the pressure on. Scott Edwards and Wesley Barresi tried to hold the innings together with scores of 38 and 37, respectively. However, the Netherlands batsmen couldn’t find the necessary momentum to chase down the imposing target.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were the standout bowlers for England, each picking up three wickets and effectively stifling the Netherlands’ batting lineup. With the win, England sailed to the seventh spot in the points table and keept their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 qualification hopes alive.
