In the high-octane cricket battle, Australia crushed India by five wickets in the third T20I of the five-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The highly-needed victory brought the Matthew Wade-led side back into the competition as they now stand on the margin of 2-1 in the ongoing bilateral series.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s sublime knock to notch up a mammoth total
Australia chose to bowl after winning the toss. Jason Behrendorff‘s excellent wicket-maiden saw the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over. Despite Kane Richardson‘s initial struggles, he dismissed Ishan Kishan for a five-ball duck, putting India at 24/2 in 2.3 overs.
The partnership between skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Ruturaj revived the Indian innings, adding 57 runs for the third wicket. Aaron Hardie claimed his maiden T20I wicket by removing Suryakumar (39 off 29) in the 11th over with an unconventional shot that resulted in an outside edge to the Australian keeper.
What followed was an extraordinary knock by Gaikwad. The right-handed batter’s explosive unbeaten 123 off 57 balls, featuring 13 fours and seven sixes, dominated the Australian bowlers. Tilak Varma‘s unbeaten 31 off 24 balls seemed overshadowed in comparison. The young duo’s massive 141-run partnership for the fourth wicket propelled India to an imposing total of 222/3 in 20 overs.

Glenn Maxwell’s storm in the run-chase
Travis Head (35 off 18) and Aaron Hardie (16 off 12) gave Australia a rapid start, putting together 47 runs in quick succession. Head, continuing his form from the World Cup 2023 final against India, showcased his aggressive batting. However, Arshdeep Singh disrupted the opening partnership by dismissing Hardie in the 5th over. Subsequently, Head and Josh Inglis fell quickly, putting Australia in a precarious position at 68/3.
Glenn Maxwell then initiated an aggressive onslaught right from the start and sustained the momentum throughout. Partnering with Marcus Stoinis, the duo contributed 60 runs for the 5th wicket, although Stoinis struggled with timing before falling to Axar Patel in the 13th over.
Wade (28 not out), then held the ground alongside Maxwell and constructed a remarkable 91-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Playing his 100th T20I, Maxwell delivered a spectacular century in just 47 balls. His explosive innings of 104 runs proved crucial in securing the much-needed victory for Australia.
