New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka in Match 41 of the ODI World Cup 2023 by five wickets and almost confirmed their berth in the semi-final of the tournament.

Trent Boult shines with the ball

The Black Caps won the toss and elected to bowl first at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. Sri Lanka’s innings got off to a shaky start, with early wickets falling. Pathum Nissanka managed only 2 runs off 8 balls, while Kusal Perera showed some brilliant hitting with 51 runs off 28 deliveries, including 9 fours and 2 sixes. However, Sri Lanka’s batting order struggled to build substantial partnerships, resulting in a total of 171 runs.

New Zealand’s bowlers were impressive, with Trent Boult leading the way with 3 wickets, conceding 37 runs in his 10 overs. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson also picked up crucial wickets, helping restrict Sri Lanka’s scoring. Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra contributed with 2 wickets each.

New Zealand chase down an easy target

Chasing a target of 172 runs, New Zealand put on a dominating performance. Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, and Glenn Phillips showcased their batting prowess, contributing crucial runs. Devon Conway top-scored with 45 runs, while Rachin Ravindra played an explosive knock of 42 runs. Daryl Mitchell’s aggressive innings of 43 runs helped New Zealand reach the target comfortably.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers faced a tough challenge defending a modest target. Dilshan Madushanka, who bowled 6.2 overs, went wicketless and conceded 58 runs. Maheesh Theekshana managed to pick up 1 wicket but conceded 43 runs in his 7 overs. Angelo Mathews was the standout performer among the bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 29 runs in his 4 overs. However, it was not enough to stop New Zealand from clinching victory.

In the end, New Zealand secured a comfortable victory, chasing down the target with 5 wickets to spare.
