South Africa locked horns with New Zealand in the 32nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The match took place at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune and saw the Proteas beat the Kiwis in a one-sided affair.
Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen shine for South Africa
Asked to bat first, the Proteas’ batters stole the show and posted a commanding total of 357-4 in their allotted 50 overs. It was Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen’s centuries that paved the way for South Africa’s innings. De Kock played a blazing knock of 114 runs from 116 deliveries, featuring ten fours and three sixes, and it also marked his fourth century in the ongoing tournament. On the other hand, Van der Dussen‘s hammered 113 runs from 118 balls, embellished with nine fours and five sixes.
David Miller’s blitz
David Miller‘s explosive cameo added to the South African total. His 53 runs from just 30 deliveries included some breathtaking strokes, leaving fans thrilled.

New Zealand’s batters struggle to get going
In reply, New Zealand’s batting struggled to cope with the daunting target set by South Africa. With the required run rate spiralling out of control, the Kiwi batters found themselves in a difficult situation, and their innings was a tale of struggle and frustration as they were unable to form substantial partnerships. Will Young showed character for New Zealand with a gritty 30, and Daryl Mitchell contributed 24 runs. However, wickets tumbled at regular intervals, with the fall of key batsmen such as Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Tom Latham. Although Glenn Phillips (60) showed resilience and fought back, the target proved too much for the Blackcaps and they were eventually bowled out.
South Africa’s bowlers, led by Marco Jansen (3/31) and Keshav Maharaj (4/46), were ruthless in their approach. They dismantled New Zealand’s batting order with ease, ultimately bowling them out for a mere 167 runs in just 35.3 overs.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to South Africa’s resounding victory:

No matter how easy it is to chase on a particular pitch-ground…there’s a lot of merit in batting first against this South African mean-batting-machine.
